The Uffizi Gallery then becomes our entry point into the Vasari Corridor. Enjoy spectacular views while passing through, over and above an ancient church, famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, and medieval towers.
The Vasari Corridor allowed the ruling families and other important figures to cross the city safely from their grand palace home to their magnificent seat of government, the Palazzo Vecchio. Closed to the public for many years, you can now explore one of Florence’s most significant pathways, as we reveal its important, sometimes humorous and always fascinating history on this small-group guided tour of one Florence’s most famous monuments.
The original and unique way to explore the ‘King’s Passage’, you’ll walk in the footsteps of the Grand Duke of Florence and Tuscany.
Almost one kilometre long, starting from inside the Uffizi Gallery, running atop the iconic Ponte Vecchio (‘The Old Bridge’) and finishing in the Pitti Palace, the corridor also hosts a collection of impressive portraits, as well as offering spectacular views over the Arno river.
Winding across the city, the Vasari Corridor passes over, through, and even around some of Florence’s most monumental sites as you entre from the Uffizi museum. Housing an important collection of valuable portraits of the Medici family and other well-known historical figures, and even permitted passers through to make a pit-stop inside the Santa Felicità church.
Built in the mid-1500s, its positioning above the Ponte Vecchio eventually motivated the meat stores that once lined the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge to be moved to an alternative location to cease the air being filled with the less-than-pleasant perfumes of butcher shops - and made way for the much more fascinating Ponte Vecchio gold jewellery stores that pass underfoot to this day.
