Vatican Museum in Rome
Viale Vaticano
Vatican Museums
Of all of the museums, not just in Italy but the world over, this one is not to be missed. The Vatican museum holds an enormous collection of art and treasures collected through it’s 2,000 years of history, from Egyptian pieces to Etruscan ruins to Renaissance paintings and, of course, the legendary Sistine Chapel.
Highlights:
- The small but precious selection of artifacts in the Egyptian Museum, particularly the Throne of Ramses II, a part of a statue of the king during his reign.
- A vast collection of sculpture from the ancient world including the Apollo Belvedere (a 2nd century Roman copy of a 4th century B.C.E Greek statue), the Laocoon and the Belvedere Torso.
- The Tapestry Gallery
- Raphael’s Rooms ( private quarters built for Pope Julius II in the early 16th century with frescoes by Raphael)
- Raphael’s School of Athens
- Beato Angelico’s Stories of St Nicholas of Bari and Madonna and Child with Saints Dominica and Catherine
- Leonardo da Vinci’s St. Jerome
- Caravaggio’s The Deposition
- A collection of modern religious art including works by Chagall, Gauguin, Klee, Kandinsky and Matisse among others
