Founded in 1471, works in the Capitoline Museum form one of the world's first public collections.
Although many of Rome's treasures have found their way to the Vatican Museum, the Capitoline does boast a very impressive collection of ancient sculpture as well as some 16th and 17th century paintings by the most famous artists of the era.
