The Presepio
An Italian Christmas Ritual
The celebration of Christmas in Italy has its own unique flavor, combining sumptuous liturgical celebrations and festive religious and cultural traditions. One of the most renowned traditions during this joyful time is the “presepio”.
The word “presepio” comes from the Latin “praesaepe,” a combination of “prae,” (in front of), and “saepire,” (to enclose). It translates into English as “manger” or “stall”, typically the one used to represent the Nativity scene at Christmas. The standard presepio comprises three principal figures: the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. These are attended to by the Magi (Three Wise Men), a few shepherds and some farm animals. The crib itself is the focal point of the scene. In Italy the tradition if constructing a presepio at Christmastime is even more elaborate with the inclusion of scenes from everyday life revolving around the manger scene. It is said, in fact, that without the realism of the additional scenery one does not have a presepio but merely a model of the Nativity.
